Free vs paid PDF editors
Most everyday PDF jobs do not need a paid editor. Here is what is free, what is not, and what trials really include.
Free in your browser (on this site)
These run locally, so they are fine for contracts and IDs you would rather not upload.
Free on your computer
- macOS Preview: combine PDFs, add/delete/move pages, fill and sign forms.
- LibreOffice Draw: opens PDFs for simple text and layout changes. Complex layouts may shift.
- Your browser: Chrome, Edge and Firefox can fill PDF forms and print to PDF.
When a paid editor is worth it
- Editing existing text in place while keeping the layout.
- OCR – making scanned documents searchable and editable.
- Redaction that truly removes sensitive text.
- Creating fillable forms, compressing big PDFs, batch processing.

Wondershare's official FAQ (checked 2026-11-05) says PDFelement's trial versions add a watermark when you save, and that Compress PDF and OCR are not available in the registered trial. So test the features you need before paying, and keep a copy of the original file.
