File checksum (SHA-256)

Downloaded an installer, ISO or firmware? Compare its hash with the one on the official site to make sure it is complete and untampered.

Hash:

How to verify a download

  1. Find the checksum on the official download page (often “SHA256” next to the link or in a .sha256 file).
  2. Choose your downloaded file above. The hash appears in a few seconds.
  3. Paste the official value into “Expected hash”. A green match means the file is bit-for-bit identical.

A match proves the file was not corrupted or altered after the publisher computed the hash. It does not prove the publisher is trustworthy – always take the hash from the official site, not from a mirror.

Do it without a browser

Windows (PowerShell): Get-FileHash .\file.iso -Algorithm SHA256
macOS: shasum -a 256 file.iso
Linux: sha256sum file.iso

Limits

The browser reads the whole file into memory, so this page is limited to 2 GB. Use the commands above for larger files. MD5 is not offered because browsers' built-in crypto does not support it and it is no longer safe against tampering.

Questions

Is SHA-1 still OK?

It still detects accidental corruption, but it is broken against deliberate tampering. Prefer SHA-256 when the publisher offers it.

Upper or lower case?

It does not matter; the comparison ignores case and spaces.
